I’ve got myself a Salifert KH/Alkalinity test kit as the first step in playing around with my water.
I’ve just run the test and found that my water here gave a reading of 0.3ml = 10.9 dKH (KH) = 3.88 meq/L (alkalinity).
Now I need to plug the numbers, along with the results from the Thames Water website, into the water treatment calculator at Jim’s, and we’ll see what we get…
According to a post at Jim’s, I need to multiply my figures by 50 to get the values in CaCO3.
I think this is about what I’ve got:
Alkalinity = 194mg/L as CaCO3
Hardness = 271.5mg/L as CaCO3 (from TW website)
With this water, I can get a good profile for milds, porters, and stouts, but will have trouble with lighter ales. I’m going to have a go at getting a better profile, though I may have to resort to RO water if I want to do a lager with “proper” water.
